Woburn Golf Club

The Marquess Course at Woburn Golf Club opened in 2000, designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark on land that forms part of the Duke of Bedford's estate in Buckinghamshire. It was created to complement Woburn's two existing championship layouts, the Duke's and Duchess courses, and represents the most recent addition to the club's collection. The design occupies gently rolling parkland characterized by mature woodland, particularly pine and birch, which frames the holes and creates a sense of seclusion throughout the round. The routing moves through varied terrain with several elevation changes that are modest by English standards but sufficient to add strategic interest and visual appeal. Water features appear on multiple holes, and the bunkering reflects Alliss and Clark's preference for traditional shapes and strategic placement rather than excessive penal design. The course measures over 7,200 yards from the championship tees, making it a substantial test for accomplished players, though multiple tee options accommodate a range of abilities. Woburn Golf Club maintains a reputation for conditioning that ranks among the best in England, with the Marquess benefiting from the same maintenance standards applied to its more established siblings. The estate setting provides a backdrop of historic parkland, and the club's facilities reflect its status as a private members' club that also hosts corporate and society play. While the Duke's Course has hosted professional events including European Tour tournaments, the Marquess serves primarily as an alternative championship-length option for members and visitors.
