Tom Bendelow laid out the original routing in the 1920s during his prolific period of creating courses throughout the mid-Atlantic and Midwest. Robert Trent Jones Sr. later redesigned or substantially revised the layout, bringing his characteristic strategic bunkering, elevated greens, and emphasis on length and shot values to the property. The terrain features the gentle hills and mature hardwood corridors typical of Maryland's Piedmont region.
