The layout takes its name from Fidra Island, visible offshore in the Firth of Forth, and forms part of Scotland's Golf Coast alongside neighboring venues like Muirfield and North Berwick. The course plays across gently rolling terrain with views toward the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock. The routing incorporates natural features of the coastal landscape, though the course sits inland from the immediate shoreline. Several holes offer elevated tee shots and approach play to greens set among dunes-style mounding and bunkering. The design emphasizes strategic options from the tee and around the greens, with fairway widths and green complexes that reward precision. Archerfield operates as a private members' club with visitor access through the club or affiliated arrangements. The estate includes the second course, Dirleton, also designed by Russell, along with a clubhouse set within restored historic buildings.
