Russell and opened in 2004, it represents a modern addition to the region's deep golfing heritage. The course sits on gently rolling terrain between the villages of Dirleton and Gullane, with views across the Firth of Forth. Russell's routing takes advantage of the natural landforms and mature woodland that characterize the Archerfield estate, creating a parkland-links hybrid that differs from the pure linksland found at nearby championship venues. The layout measures over 7,200 yards from the back tees and features broad fairways bordered by specimen trees, strategic bunkering, and water hazards that come into play on several holes. Russell incorporated the estate's existing landscape features, including stone walls and established tree lines, to frame holes and define playing corridors. The course presents a more sheltered, inland character than the exposed links courses that dominate East Lothian, though it shares the firm turf conditions and fast-running surfaces typical of the region. Archerfield operates as a private members' club with limited visitor access, offering an exclusive alternative to the public championship courses nearby. The estate includes a second course, the Fidra, also designed by Russell, along with a clubhouse set within restored historic buildings.
