The Canyon Course at Steele Canyon Golf Club opened in 1991 as part of Gary Player's design work in the foothills east of San Diego. The property sits in Jamul, roughly twenty miles from downtown, where the terrain transitions from coastal valleys into the rugged backcountry characteristic of eastern San Diego County. Player routed the course through natural canyons and across rolling hillsides, incorporating significant elevation changes and native vegetation into the playing corridors. The layout takes advantage of the dramatic topography, with several holes playing across ravines or along canyon edges. Oak trees, sagebrush, and exposed rock formations frame many holes, and the elevation provides views across the surrounding hills and valleys. The design requires course management around the natural hazards, with forced carries and uneven lies common throughout the round. Water features appear on several holes, adding variety to the strategic demands. Steele Canyon operates as a public facility and has served as a venue for various regional amateur competitions over the years. The course is part of a larger residential community, though the routing maintains separation from housing on many holes. The clubhouse offers standard amenities and dining options typical of Southern California daily-fee courses. The Canyon Course shares the property with two additional nine-hole layouts, also designed by Player, giving the facility twenty-seven holes total.
