Ardfin

Ardfin occupies a remote coastal site on the Isle of Jura, one of Scotland's least populated islands in the Inner Hebrides. The course was designed by Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1926, though it fell into disuse and was later restored and reimagined in the early 21st century. The modern iteration, completed in 2016, was designed by Niall Rowan and incorporates elements of MacKenzie's original routing while expanding the layout across dramatic duneland and clifftop terrain overlooking the Sound of Jura. The property features significant elevation changes and natural linksland characteristics, with holes routed through sand dunes, across heathland, and along exposed coastal stretches. The landscape provides views toward the Paps of Jura, the island's distinctive mountain peaks, and across the water to neighboring islands. The routing takes advantage of the natural contours and coastal setting, with several holes playing directly alongside the shore. Access to Jura requires ferry service from the mainland, and the island's isolation contributes to the course's exclusivity. Ardfin operates as a private estate with limited play, primarily serving guests of the associated lodge and a small membership. The course remains relatively unknown compared to Scotland's major championship venues, though it has attracted attention within golf architecture circles for its remote setting and links character. The estate emphasizes privacy and a traditional Scottish sporting experience that extends beyond golf to include fishing and other country pursuits.
