Strand Course
Portstewart, Londonderry, Northern Ireland

The Strand course at Portstewart Golf Club occupies a dramatic stretch of duneland along the north coast of County Londonderry, where the Atlantic meets one of Ireland's finest natural golfing landscapes. Originally laid out by A. G. Gow, the course has evolved over decades to take full advantage of the towering sand hills and native linksland that define this portion of the Causeway Coast. The routing moves through varied terrain, from elevated dunes offering views across the ocean to lower-lying fairways threaded between ridges of marram grass. The opening hole is among the most celebrated starting holes in links golf—a par five played from an elevated tee high in the dunes, presenting golfers with an immediate sense of the property's scale and natural drama. The course continues through classic linksland features: rumpled fairways, deep pot bunkers, and greens that sit naturally within the contours of the land. The back nine shifts character somewhat, incorporating parkland elements as the routing moves away from the highest dunes, though the closing stretch returns to more traditional links terrain. Portstewart has hosted numerous regional and national amateur championships, serving as a regular venue for Irish and Ulster competitions. The club maintains a strong membership tradition and operates alongside two other courses on the property. The Strand course consistently appears in rankings of Irish and British links, recognized for its natural routing and the quality of its duneland holes.
