Elevated tees, rolling fairways, and firm, fast greens make every hole engaging. Conditions are immaculate, and recent restorations have enhanced its classic charm. Often overlooked next to the Lower, the Upper is equally enjoyable—strategic, scenic, and a true pleasure to play

I was lucky to grow up there and knew it then. It’s cast in the shadows of Winged Foot and Baltusrol but Ridgewood is so balanced, reflective of Tillinghast and offers so many good holes over the three 9’s.

Essex County is a conglomeration of some of the game’s best designer. With Tillinghast, Raynor, and MacDonald all having a part to play in the design. Despite a wet spring, the course still played firm and fast in the July heat.

Extremely hilly course with a ton of elevation change. Conditions were fine, but inconsistent as the course is on the side of a mountain. Some great variety with the layout, but no really great holes. Last 4 holes are really flat and uninteresting…

How we rank

This ranking uses published scorecard data from each course’s longest men’s tees, the same tee set for every course. Only 18-hole courses with a yardage for every hole, a total that matches the hole-by-hole sum, and a par between 54 and 80 are included, and the tees must carry a single slope rating (55–155) and course rating. Courses whose scorecard duplicates another course’s are left out until the data is fixed. Courses are ordered by slope rating, then course rating, then Course Vaults score. Only open courses with a published Course Vaults score (at least 5 explicit ratings) are eligible, and a page is published only when at least 5 courses qualify. City pages include courses within about 25 miles of Oak Ridge, so nearby suburbs can appear. Rankings refresh about hourly.
