Hamilton Golf & Country Club

Hamilton Golf & Country Club's West Course occupies rolling terrain in Ancaster, part of the Niagara Escarpment region southwest of Hamilton. The club dates to 1894, making it one of Canada's oldest, and the West Course reflects the work of Harry Colt, who routed the layout in the 1914–1916 period during his only visit to Canada. Colt's design takes advantage of the property's natural elevation changes and wooded corridors, creating a parkland test that moves through varied topography with several holes playing along or across slopes. The routing features a mix of uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies, with greens that tend toward subtle internal contours rather than severe undulation. Mature hardwoods frame many holes, and the course requires accurate placement off the tee to navigate the tree-lined fairways and avoid awkward angles into the greens. The back nine includes a stretch of holes that move through more dramatic elevation, particularly as the course works its way through the escarpment's natural folds. Hamilton Golf & Country Club has hosted numerous national championships, including multiple Canadian Opens and Canadian Amateurs. The West Course served as the venue for the 2003 and 2012 Canadian Opens, where the layout tested professional fields with its combination of length, strategic bunkering, and the premium it places on controlled ball-striking. The club maintains a traditional membership culture and operates both the West Course and an additional nine-hole layout on the property.
