The Torrance Course
St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland

The Torrance course at Fairmont St Andrews opened in 2001, designed by former Ryder Cup captain and European Tour professional Sam Torrance. It sits alongside the resort's Devlin course on elevated ground above St Andrews Bay, occupying a site that offers sweeping views across the Firth of Tay and toward the town of St Andrews itself. The land features rolling terrain characteristic of the Fife coastline, and the routing takes advantage of the natural contours while incorporating water features and strategic bunkering throughout the layout. As a resort course, The Torrance measures over 7,200 yards from the championship tees and presents a modern parkland-links hybrid character rather than a traditional links experience. The design emphasizes playability for a range of abilities while maintaining challenge from the back markers, with generous fairways balanced by well-positioned hazards that reward accuracy on approach shots. Several holes play along ridgelines that provide dramatic coastal panoramas, particularly on the outward nine. The Fairmont resort setting means the course serves both visiting golfers and resort guests, with full practice facilities and clubhouse amenities integrated into the hotel complex. While The Torrance does not carry the historical weight of the Old Course or other championship venues in St Andrews, it provides a contemporary complement to the area's traditional links courses and has hosted various regional amateur competitions since opening.
