South Course
Millstone Township, NJ, USA

Charleston Springs Golf Club's South Course is a Mark Mungeam design located in Millstone Township, in the central New Jersey countryside west of the Shore region. Mungeam, a Massachusetts-based architect known for restoration work at classic northeastern courses and for thoughtful new designs that respect traditional golf architecture principles, routed this course through rolling terrain characteristic of the inner Coastal Plain. The layout takes advantage of natural elevation changes and wooded corridors, with holes that move through a mix of open and tree-lined playing corridors. The course reflects Mungeam's approach of creating strategic interest through green complexes and bunkering rather than through artificial difficulty. Players encounter varied hole lengths and angles, with greens that reward accurate approach play and penalize misses with short-game challenges. The property's natural drainage and soil conditions allow for firm playing surfaces during much of the season, which suits the ground-game options built into the design. Charleston Springs operates as a semi-private facility, offering both member and public play. The club serves the growing residential communities of western Monmouth County, an area that has seen significant development since the 1990s. The South Course complements the club's other eighteen holes, providing variety for regular players while remaining accessible to visitors seeking well-conditioned golf in a parkland setting between the urban corridor and the Jersey Shore.

Competed here and played with friends for years. If you can get an early time it’ll be lots of fun. Firm public course conditions are about what you’d expect, but it’s a solid little layout and there’s a good amount of punishment. Hole 2 and 8 are questionable designs, but this course always beats my expectations and it’s a fun time as long as you aren’t trapped in 5 hour rounds
