Minnesota National Golf Course's Savanna course occupies rolling terrain in the pine forests and lake country of central Minnesota, roughly two hours north of the Twin Cities near McGregor. The course was designed by Joel Goldstrand and opened in the early 2000s as part of a 36-hole facility that includes the companion Pines course. Goldstrand, a Minnesota-based architect, routed the layout through natural sand deposits and native grasses characteristic of the transition zone between hardwood forests and prairie grasslands that once covered parts of this region. The course takes its name from the savanna ecosystem it traverses, with fairways carved through stands of oak and pine that frame playing corridors. The sandy soil provides firm conditions and natural drainage, while elevation changes create variety in both shot values and views across the property. Several holes play along or over wetland areas that remain from the site's pre-development hydrology. The design emphasizes strategic options from the tee rather than forced carries, with multiple routes available on many holes depending on pin position and wind. Minnesota National operates as a semi-private facility and has hosted regional amateur competitions, drawing players from the upper Midwest. The club's location in Minnesota's lake district makes it part of a golf destination area popular during the short northern season. The clubhouse serves both courses and provides views over the surrounding forest landscape.
