Ruttgers Bay Lake Lodge

The Lakes at Ruttgers Bay Lake Lodge occupies wooded terrain in the Brainbridge Lakes area of central Minnesota, approximately twenty miles north of Brainerd. Gerry Pirkl and Donald Brauer designed the course, which opened as part of the historic Ruttgers resort property. The layout works through stands of pine and hardwood forest typical of the region, with several holes playing along or across wetland areas that connect the chain of lakes surrounding the property. The routing takes advantage of the natural elevation changes found in this glacially-shaped landscape, creating variety in both shot values and visual character throughout the round. The course serves primarily as a resort amenity for guests of Ruttgers Bay Lake Lodge, which traces its hospitality roots back to the early twentieth century when the Ruttger family established one of Minnesota's pioneering destination resorts. The golf experience reflects the northwoods setting, with tree-lined fairways requiring accuracy and strategic positioning. Water hazards appear on multiple holes, though the design generally allows for recovery and maintains playability for the range of skill levels typical at a resort facility. The property sits within a region known for its concentration of golf courses, as the Brainerd Lakes area developed into a popular summer golf destination for visitors from the Twin Cities and beyond. The course complements the lodge's other recreational offerings and maintains the traditional character of Minnesota resort golf.
