Sagebrush Golf & Sporting Club

Sagebrush sits in the high desert rangeland of British Columbia's interior, approximately thirty kilometers west of Merritt in the Nicola Valley. Rod Whitman routed the course across rolling terrain marked by native sagebrush, fescue grasses, and scattered ponderosa pine, creating a walking-only layout that follows the natural contours of the land. The property occupies former ranchland at roughly 3,000 feet elevation, where the climate is notably drier than coastal British Columbia, producing firm, fast playing conditions through much of the season. Whitman's design emphasizes wide fairways and minimal rough, allowing balls to run out across the firm ground and encouraging creative ground-game approaches. The greens are large and contoured, with significant internal movement that rewards careful study of angles and slopes. Bunkers are placed sparingly but strategically, often appearing as natural sandy blowouts that blend into the surrounding landscape. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes throughout the property, offering views across the valley and surrounding hills. The club operates as a private facility with limited membership, maintaining a low-key atmosphere focused on the golf experience. Sagebrush has gained recognition among architecture enthusiasts for its minimalist design approach and its expression of links-style golf in an unexpected North American setting. The course plays firm and fast by design, with conditions that can vary significantly depending on wind, which is a frequent factor in this exposed valley location.
