The Els Club Desaru Coast Ocean Course occupies a coastal site along the South China Sea in southeastern Johor, part of a larger resort development that has positioned Desaru as a golf destination within reach of Singapore. Ernie Els designed the course to take advantage of the natural terrain, which includes forested areas, wetlands, and elevation changes uncommon in much of peninsular Malaysia's coastal geography. The routing incorporates two distinct nines—the Ridge and Lakes courses—that can be combined in various configurations, with the Ocean designation referring to the primary eighteen-hole combination that maximizes exposure to sea views and coastal breezes. The Ridge nine moves through higher ground with more pronounced topography, offering glimpses of the coastline and requiring strategic positioning off the tee where fairways bend around natural contours. The Lakes nine plays through lower-lying terrain where water features come into play more frequently, creating a different tactical challenge. Els incorporated wide fairways characteristic of his design philosophy, but the bunkering and green complexes demand precision on approach shots, particularly when wind affects club selection. The course opened in 2017 as part of the broader Desaru Coast development, which includes accommodation and additional recreational facilities. The layout reflects Els's experience designing in tropical and coastal environments, with turf varieties and drainage systems suited to the region's climate. The club operates as part of the resort infrastructure, serving both resort guests and members, with the Ocean Course representing the flagship layout among the property's golf offerings.
