The Els Club Desaru Coast - Ocean Course occupies a coastal site along the South China Sea in Desaru, a resort area in southeastern Johor, Malaysia. Designed by Ernie Els and opened in 2018 as part of a larger resort development, the course represents the South African major champion's design philosophy emphasizing strategic options and natural integration. The layout takes advantage of the property's oceanfront location, with several holes playing directly along the shoreline and others set among preserved wetlands and native vegetation. The routing moves through varied terrain that includes coastal dunes, inland lakes, and forested areas. The front nine generally plays away from the water through more protected landscape, while the back nine features the signature oceanside stretch where wind and views become prominent factors. The design incorporates wide fairways with strategic bunkering that rewards positioning over pure distance, and greens that feature subtle contours requiring careful approach play. Natural waste areas and native grasses frame many holes, maintaining the coastal character while defining playing corridors. The course serves as the centerpiece of a resort complex that includes accommodation, dining facilities, and a second championship layout designed by Vijay Singh. The Ocean Course has been positioned to attract both resort guests and serious golfers traveling to the Johor region, which has seen significant golf development in recent years due to its proximity to Singapore. The layout measures over 7,000 yards from the championship tees and offers multiple tee options to accommodate different skill levels.
