Yeah I don’t think it gets better than this at all.
I loved everything about this course and had a fantastic caddie named “JT.” He has looped all over the peninsula and also a private course called “The Institute” (look it up), and was by far the most helpful and knowledgeable caddie I’ve ever had and saved me at least six shots. I arrived about ninety minutes before my tee time, introduced myself to the folks in the clubhouse, stater, and other folks on the practice green. Did breakfast outside overlooking the first hole, and loved every second of it. Delicious. Snagged a locker downstairs (very average but I loved it) and then hit some balls and took off. Three great playing partners and absolutely fell in love with the course after my tee shot on 1, which is downhill and allows you to go all out driver. The course was extremely well-manicured and makes you think. I really didn’t have a bad lie all day and the greens were consistent. Most amazing/interesting/challenging green complexes I’ve ever seen and especially loved seeing MacKenzie’s former house. Play this course. Don’t walk. Run!

Pasatiempo is one of those rare courses where the round ends and you realize you can recall all 18 holes without effort. There’s no filler anywhere. Every tee shot presents a decision, every approach punishes indifference, and every green demands full engagement. It’s a masterclass in how to use land, angles, and contour to keep a golfer thinking from start to finish. Even after a stretch of wet weather, the conditioning was excellent. The rough was legitimately penal, and the bunkering is top-shelf, both visually and strategically. MacKenzie’s fingerprints are everywhere with diagonal hazards, deceptive visuals, and greens that border on unhinged (in the best possible way). The putting surfaces were immaculate, rolling true with the kind of wild internal movement that forces creativity on every putt. And despite the tips being just 6,400 yards, Pasatiempo was still the most challenging course I’ve ever played, a perfect example of how strategy and contour can outmuscle raw yardage. It’s a sneaky-tough walk, compact, but with plenty of climbs that add to the mental grind. The course has the intangible aura you expect from a MacKenzie design, but Pasatiempo’s greatness isn’t just history, it’s how consistently it makes you think. You can’t coast here. Every shot asks for intentionality, and the wrong side of fairways or greens means immediate stress. What makes the difficulty fair is that the course always shows you the right line, you just have to execute. Nothing is hidden, but everything is demanding. Service matches the golf, friendly, dialed-in, and aware of the experience they’re delivering. And yes, the logo absolutely rips. Pasatiempo is a strategic feast, a throwback that feels timeless, and one of the most memorable routings on the West Coast. An easy recommendation for anyone who values architecture, contour, and decision-making above just length. Every hole was amazing and it has the best collection of par 3s I’ve ever played, and the back 9 was hit after hit. Holes 3 and 11-16.
My favorite green complexes I’ve played anywhere. Loved the fingered bunkering. Brilliantly navigated hole layouts around challenging terrain on the back nine. Publicly accessible as well - a big plus. Just not in perfect shape.
The masses like marvel movies, but real cinephiles love Citizen Kane. If you are a golf course architect fan or golf historian you should make your way down to Pasatiempo. The Dr.’s ashes are spread on hole 16 as he declared it the greatest hole he ever created. In its context as an original and pre-Augusta project, it’s very cool. A nugget my caddy left me with was that you could give the land to many architects today and they couldn’t have routed it a finely as Dr. Mackenzie. It’s not an easy spot to route good golf holes and he certainly found many.

Probably the best set of par 3’s I’ve ever played. Do not get fooled by the yardage on the scorecard, Pasatiempo plays far longer. Absolute blast of a golf course. Have to think on every shot, lots of slope, and embodies all Mackenzie principles. You can see why he settled down here.
A course where every hole is unique and there is no filler. Bunkering and the way Mackenzie takes you through the landscape is world class.
Didn’t understand the hype at first, but now it makes total sense. Off the tee is generally open, but approach + around the greens are incredibly difficult. Every green is guarded by deep, uniquely shaped bunkers making any missed shot almost guaranteed to be in a bunker. Worth the play every time
