The Old Course at Gog Magog Golf Club occupies chalk downland on the southern edge of Cambridge, where the club was established in 1901. Willie Park Jr. laid out the original course, which was later revised by James Braid in the 1920s. Martin Hawtree undertook further modifications in more recent decades to refine the routing and adapt the layout to modern play. The chalk subsoil provides firm, free-draining conditions that keep the course playable through much of the year, a characteristic feature of downland golf in England. Gog Magog has long served as a venue for regional amateur competitions and university golf, given its proximity to Cambridge. The club maintains two eighteenth-hole courses—the Old and the Wandlebury—and the Old Course is generally regarded as the more established and challenging of the pair.
