Martin Hawtree is a British golf course architect who has led the family firm Hawtree Limited as director and chief architect since 1985. The Hawtree practice, established across multiple generations, has become one of the most respected names in golf course architecture, particularly known for sensitive work on historic links courses and championship venues.
Among his most significant projects is the comprehensive redesign of Muirfield, widely regarded as one of the finest championship links in the world. His portfolio also includes Trump International Golf Links Scotland near Aberdeen, created in collaboration with Donald Trump. Hawtree has worked extensively across the British Isles, with notable designs and renovations at Formby, Wallasey, and other traditional clubs, as well as creating Bearwood Lakes in Berkshire—a highly regarded modern parkland course.
Beyond the UK, his work spans Europe and further afield, including projects in Belgium (Royal Waterloo, Avernas), Portugal (Millennium at Vilamoura), China, and South Africa. His approach typically emphasizes strategic design that respects the land's natural character while meeting modern championship standards.
