The layout features several holes that play directly along or toward the ocean, particularly on the back nine, where the routing reaches its most dramatic terrain. The dunes themselves—some rising significantly above fairway level—frame many holes and create natural amphitheaters around greens. Hills incorporated the existing topography rather than moving large amounts of earth, resulting in a course that feels integrated into its landscape. The wind off the Atlantic is a constant factor in club selection and strategy. Oitavos Dunes has hosted professional events on the European Challenge Tour and has appeared in various European course rankings since its opening. The course is part of a larger resort property that includes hotel accommodations, though it maintains a relatively quiet profile compared to Portugal's better-known Algarve destinations.
