El Rompido Golf Club

El Rompido Golf Club's North Course sits along Spain's Costa de la Luz in Huelva province, west of the more traveled Costa del Sol. Designed by Alvaro Arana and opened in 2003, the layout occupies relatively flat coastal terrain bordered by marshlands that connect to the nearby Piedras River estuary and the protected wetlands of the Marismas del Odiel. The course plays through corridors of umbrella pines and Mediterranean scrub, with the Atlantic Ocean visible from several holes. The routing takes advantage of the natural vegetation and water features, incorporating lagoons and drainage channels that reflect the area's estuarine character. The design emphasizes strategic bunkering and demands accuracy over distance, with fairways that reward positioning for approach shots into greens protected by sand and water. Several holes run along or near the marshland edges, where the native landscape provides both scenic backdrop and hazard. The course measures over 6,000 meters from the back tees and offers multiple teeing options to accommodate different skill levels. El Rompido operates as a resort facility with the North Course complemented by a companion South Course also designed by Arana. The club attracts a mix of European visitors and Spanish golfers, particularly during the mild winter months when the region's temperate climate makes it a popular alternative to colder northern latitudes. The setting remains relatively undeveloped compared to more densely built coastal golf destinations in Andalusia.
