New Zealand Golf Club occupies a heathland site in Addlestone, Surrey, roughly twenty miles southwest of central London. The course was established in 1895 by members of the New Zealand cricket and rugby touring teams who were visiting England, giving the club its distinctive name despite its English location. Samuel "Muir" Fergusson laid out the original design, and Tom Simpson later contributed modifications that enhanced the strategic character of the layout. The course sits on classic Surrey heathland terrain characterized by sandy soil, heather, pine and birch trees, and natural undulations. This setting places it within the same geological belt as more celebrated Surrey courses, offering firm turf conditions and good drainage year-round. The routing makes use of the property's natural contours, with holes playing through corridors of mature trees and across gently rolling ground. Heather and gorse frame many fairways, demanding accuracy from the tee while rewarding well-positioned drives with favorable angles into the greens. New Zealand Golf Club maintains a traditional members' club atmosphere, hosting regular club competitions and regional amateur events. The course measures around 6,400 yards from the back tees, providing a layout that emphasizes strategic shot-making over length. Simpson's design principles—particularly his attention to green complexes and the importance of approach angles—remain evident throughout the round. The club operates as a private facility, though visitors are welcomed by prior arrangement on certain days.
