Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club sits on the Canadian Shield near Port Carling, Ontario, in the heart of the Muskoka cottage region north of Toronto. Stanley Thompson designed the course in 1926 during the early phase of his career, when he was establishing the naturalistic design principles that would define Canadian golf architecture. The property occupies rugged terrain typical of the Shield landscape, with exposed granite outcroppings, dense stands of pine and hardwood, and elevation changes that Thompson incorporated into the routing. The course measures just over 6,000 yards from the back tees, modest by contemporary standards but characteristic of Thompson's strategic approach to design. He routed holes through corridors of mature forest and over rolling, rocky ground, using the natural contours to create playing angles and visual interest. Several holes feature elevated tees with views across the surrounding lakes and woodlands. The greens are relatively small and contoured, often positioned on natural plateaus or nestled against rock formations. Muskoka Lakes functions primarily as a private summer retreat for members, many of whom maintain seasonal residences in the region. The club operates during the warmer months when the Muskoka area becomes a recreational destination. The course has undergone periodic maintenance and restoration work over the decades to preserve Thompson's original design intent while adapting to modern turf management practices.
