Real Club de Golf Las Palmas

Real Club de Golf Las Palmas occupies volcanic terrain in the hills above Santa Brígida, roughly ten miles inland from the capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Designed by Mackenzie Ross and opened in 1957, the course represents one of the architect's later works, following his post-war reconstruction of Turnberry and other notable British projects. The layout sits at approximately 500 meters elevation in the Bandama caldera region, where the volcanic topography creates natural movement and dramatic elevation changes throughout the round. The routing takes advantage of the island's distinctive landscape, with fairways carved through volcanic rock formations and native vegetation including palms, pines, and eucalyptus. The terrain produces uneven lies and requires thoughtful course management, as the volcanic soil drains quickly but creates firm, fast-running conditions. Views extend across the island's interior valleys and, on clear days, toward the Atlantic coast. The design incorporates the natural contours rather than imposing artificial shaping, giving the course a rugged, unpredictable character that differs from parkland layouts at sea level. As the oldest golf club in Spain, founded in 1891, Real Club de Golf Las Palmas has a long competitive history and has hosted numerous Spanish national championships. The club maintains traditional membership practices and serves as a year-round facility, benefiting from Gran Canaria's temperate climate. The course remains a testing layout for accomplished players while offering historical significance as both Spain's first club and an example of Ross's work in Mediterranean climates.
