Salobre Golf & Resort

The Old Course at Salobre Golf & Resort sits in the southern municipality of Maspalomas on Gran Canaria, designed by Swiss architect Roland Favré and opened in the early 2000s as part of a larger resort development in the Canary Islands. The course occupies elevated terrain in the island's interior, positioned between the coastal tourist zones and the volcanic highlands that characterize Gran Canaria's dramatic topography. Favré's routing takes advantage of the natural barranco landscape—deep ravines carved into the volcanic rock—creating significant elevation changes and strategic challenges throughout the round. The design incorporates the rugged volcanic geology directly into play, with several holes requiring carries over rocky gorges and others playing along ridgelines that offer views toward the Atlantic and the island's mountainous center. The terrain dictates a layout where accurate placement matters more than distance on many holes, as the barrancos and steep slopes penalize wayward shots. Native vegetation and exposed rock faces frame the fairways, giving the course a distinct desert-mountain character uncommon in European resort golf. Salobre operates as part of a resort complex that includes residential development and hotel accommodations, serving both visiting golfers and the island's growing golf tourism market. The course benefits from Gran Canaria's year-round mild climate, making it playable in all seasons. A second course, the New Course, was added to the property later, but the Old Course remains the original Favré design and the resort's initial championship layout.
