The K Club

The K Club sits along the River Liffey in County Kildare, roughly twenty miles west of Dublin. Arnold Palmer designed the property's two championship courses in the 1990s, with the Palmer Course (originally the North Course) opening in 1991. Palmer routed the layout through mature parkland featuring specimen trees, water hazards, and the river itself, which influences play on several holes. The design reflects Palmer's preference for strategic bunkering and risk-reward opportunities, particularly around the greens and on approach shots. The course gained international prominence when it hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006, the first time the matches were held in Ireland. That event brought significant attention to the layout's tournament-ready conditioning and its ability to challenge professional fields. The K Club has also served as a European Tour venue multiple times, hosting the European Open (later the Smurfit European Open) for many years during the 1990s and 2000s. The 2023 Irish Open marked another chapter in this competitive history. The property operates as a luxury resort with extensive facilities including accommodation, dining, and spa services. The Palmer Course features water prominently throughout the round, with the Liffey and constructed lakes demanding accuracy on numerous holes. The closing stretch includes several holes where water pressures both tee shots and approaches, creating drama in tournament play. The parkland setting provides a traditional Irish golf atmosphere despite the relatively modern design, with tree-lined fairways and lush conditioning characteristic of resort courses in the region.
