The Prairie Club

The Prairie Club's Horse Course, designed by Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford, opened in 2010 as the second eighteen-hole layout at this remote Nebraska golf destination. The course takes its name from the wild horses that roam the surrounding Sandhills region, one of the largest grass-stabilized sand dune formations in the Western Hemisphere. Hanse and Shackelford routed the course through rolling duneland terrain characterized by native grasses and minimal tree cover, creating a links-style experience in the heart of the Great Plains. The design philosophy emphasizes ground game options and strategic variety, with wide fairways that encourage creative shot-making and multiple routes to greens. The sandy soil provides firm, fast conditions that contrast with typical American parkland golf. Greens feature subtle contours and are often approachable by both air and ground, rewarding players who can read the terrain and use the natural slopes. The course plays across varied elevations within the dune landscape, offering views of the expansive prairie horizon. The Prairie Club operates as a semi-private facility that welcomes traveling golfers, with the Horse Course complementing the property's original Pines Course and a short par-3 layout. The remote location in the Sandhills, roughly 240 miles northwest of Omaha, contributes to a sense of isolation and immersion in the distinctive Nebraska landscape.
