The golf course was designed by Jack Nicklaus II and opened in the mid-1990s as part of the property's conversion into a Marriott hotel and country club. The course plays across gently rolling terrain typical of the Hertfordshire countryside, with tree-lined fairways and strategic bunkering that reflects the Nicklaus design philosophy of rewarding accurate play. Several holes feature water hazards that require careful club selection and course management, particularly on approach shots. Hanbury Manor has hosted professional events on the European Tour, most notably the English Open in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The tournament brought players including Colin Montgomerie and other tour regulars to the course during that period.
