Great Dunes Course
Jekyll Island, GA, USA

Great Dunes, on Jekyll Island, stands as a testament to the enduring allure of accessible, seaside golf. Designed in the late 1920s by Walter Travis, the layout evokes a classic, pre-war feel where strategy trumps sheer power. The course occupies a relatively flat, coastal plain, and is characterized by its close proximity to the ocean, the ever-present wind, and a reliance on strategically placed bunkers to protect par. The emphasis isn't on length, with many holes favouring a thoughtful approach over brute force, however errant shots are swallowed up by the ever-present coastal scrub. This is a course of doglegs and tricky par 3s. While Great Dunes hasn't played host to major professional events, its charm lies in its democratic spirit, welcoming golfers of all skill levels to experience a traditional, no-frills round. The experience culminates at the clubhouse where stories of near misses and clutch putts are shared over classic, Southern fareβa fitting end to a day spent embracing the simple pleasures of the game.

This course was beautiful will admit had some kinks to it since being renovated recently. But has the most beautiful hole Iβve ever played on in my life.
One of those you just admire. Shot a horrid number.
Beautiful design. Hole 4 is up there with the best Iβve ever played. I think in a couple years once the grass fully grows in it will be elite
New design that just opened in Walter Travis style. Place has some really good bones as conditioning is still growing in. I believe in a couple years once fully grown in and natives live and all this place has a ton of potential.
The potential is there, the dunes holes are visually appealing and fun to play. It needs more time and work, but if the conditions get anywhere near top tier, this could be a great public access course. Just not there yet; will play again and hopefully raise my rating.
Recency bias is playing into this but it may be the best public course in GA. Easily the best one on the Golden Isles. 4-16 are fantastic, canβt wait to see it grow in. #2 is the best hole on the course and itβs not even a Travis hole thatβs how good the transitions are.
This course opened on Nov 1, 2025. Still needs a decent amount of time for grow in, it is no where near a finished product, the greens are in good shape but were dangerously slow. The layout is fantastic, fun and visually appealing. This place in the middle of 2026 will be outstanding and great value. Glad I got to play in the first month and look forward to being back.
