Fyre Lake Course
Sherrard, IL, USA

Fyre Lake Golf Club, carved into the rolling Illinois landscape near Sherrard, is a testament to Midwestern golf's enduring appeal. Its relatively modern design presents a fair test without the pretense of demanding perfection. A course designed by the little known architect Dick Nugent, it is a parkland layout that favors a strategic approach over brute force. Errant shots are penalized, of course, but the overall feel is one of relaxed, accessible golf for players of all skill levels. The course itself is known for its well-maintained greens and tree-lined fairways, characteristics that create a picturesque, engaging round. Water hazards come into play on several holes, adding an element of risk-reward decision-making to the experience. Fyre Lake is not a championship venue, nor does it pretend to be. Instead, it exists as a haven for the local golfing community. Fyre Lake is a place where golf is celebrated not for its difficulty, but for its camaraderie. The clubhouse is a gathering point known locally for its Friday fish fry, a weekly tradition that embodies the unpretentious spirit of the club. While the course may not garner national headlines, it holds a special place in the hearts of its members and the community that surrounds it.

Good turf conditions and green complexes. In true Nicklaus style, narrow fairways with lots of bunkers + thick rough, especially around the greens. Played a weird round of 45-33. Definitely worth seeing if you find yourself in the area
Awesome course with a ton of beautiful holes. Rewarded good shots but penalized bad ones.
Might be one of the best value courses in the Midwest
Such a hidden gem. Played in 2023. Was $60 with a cart. Can be a hair of target golf but overall best course I’ve ever played around that price range. Beautiful views and scenery and greens and fairways were nearly perfect!
