Columbia Golf Course

Columbia Golf Course occupies a wooded tract along the Mississippi River in northeast Minneapolis, part of the city's well-established municipal golf system. Opened in 1919, the course was designed by Tom Vardon, brother of the legendary Harry Vardon, during an era when Minneapolis was rapidly expanding its public golf offerings to meet growing demand. The layout sits on rolling terrain characteristic of the river valley, with mature hardwoods framing many holes and the natural topography providing elevation changes uncommon in municipal courses of the region. The routing takes advantage of the property's natural contours, moving through corridors of oak and elm with several holes playing along ridgelines that offer views toward the river corridor. The design reflects the strategic principles of its era, with relatively straightforward holes that reward accurate placement over pure distance. Greens are modestly sized and protected by traditional bunkering, and the tree-lined fairways demand controlled shot-making, particularly on approach shots where angles matter. Columbia serves a diverse neighborhood population and maintains the accessible, no-frills character typical of Minneapolis municipal facilities. The course has undergone periodic updates to bunkers and drainage over the decades while retaining its fundamental routing and character. As one of the older public courses in the Twin Cities, it represents an important piece of the region's golf history and continues to provide affordable golf in an urban setting where land pressures have made course preservation increasingly significant.
