Colo Vista Course
Bastrop, TX, USA

Colo Vista Country Club sits in Bastrop, Texas, a town roughly thirty miles east of Austin known for its distinctive "Lost Pines" ecosystem—an isolated stand of loblolly pines that creates a landscape more reminiscent of East Texas than the typical Central Texas Hill Country. The course was designed by Les Appelt, a Texas-based architect who worked primarily in the state during the latter half of the twentieth century, creating layouts for smaller communities and private clubs across the region. The routing takes advantage of the natural rolling terrain and pine-forested setting characteristic of the area. Players encounter tree-lined fairways that require accuracy off the tee, with the pines creating natural corridors and framing holes throughout the round. The design reflects a traditional approach common to Texas courses of its era, emphasizing playability for members while incorporating the native landscape features. Colo Vista serves as the centerpiece of a residential community, functioning as a member-owned facility that anchors local golf activity in Bastrop County. The club provides a home course for area golfers seeking a tree-lined layout distinct from the more open, links-influenced designs found elsewhere in Central Texas. The setting offers a quieter, more secluded atmosphere compared to courses in the Austin metropolitan area, with the pine forest creating a sense of separation from the surrounding development.
Course used to be really special. They have an epic clubhouse / building on property and used to host an event called the “Texas Junior Masters” for kids 14 and under. The top 5 players entering the final day would be “fit” for their green jacket before the final round and the winner would be presented their custom jacket at award ceremony. I was lucky enough to be fit for one but ended up with a third place finish that year. Club has had a lot of financial issues over the years and the course has gone through all sorts of phases. Need to get back out there and see the current state of the course to provide an accurate rating.
