Championship Course
Clemmons, NC, USA

The Championship Course at Tanglewood Park opened in 1958 as a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design on public parkland in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, just west of Winston-Salem. Jones routed the course through rolling, wooded terrain along Yadkin River bottomland, creating a layout that blends his signature strategic bunkering and large, contoured greens with the natural topography of mature hardwoods and open meadows. The course underwent renovations by Roger Rulewich, a longtime Jones associate, and more recently by MacCurrach Golf, maintaining the architectural lineage while updating playing surfaces and infrastructure. The Championship Course has hosted the PGA Tour's Vantage Championship (formerly the Greater Greensboro Open) and served as a venue for various professional and amateur events over several decades. Its tournament pedigree reflects Jones's ability to create challenge through length, strategic hazard placement, and green complexes that reward precision. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes and creek corridors, with several holes playing along or across water features that define risk-reward decisions. As part of a county-owned park facility, Tanglewood offers public access alongside its sister course, the Reynolds Course. The property includes extensive recreational amenities beyond golf, and the Championship layout remains a notable example of mid-century public course design that balances accessibility with competitive standards. The tree-lined fairways and parkland character give the course a traditional Carolina feel, while the Jones design principles ensure strategic variety throughout the round.
