Golf Château Montebello

Golf Château Montebello occupies a scenic stretch of land in the Outaouais region of western Québec, roughly an hour's drive from Ottawa. The course was designed by Stanley Thompson and opened in 1930 as part of the Château Montebello resort property, which sits along the Ottawa River. Thompson, Canada's most celebrated Golden Age architect, routed the layout through rolling forested terrain characteristic of the Laurentian foothills, incorporating natural elevation changes and mature stands of pine, maple, and birch into the design. The course measures just over 6,000 yards from the back tees and plays as a par 70. Thompson's routing takes advantage of the property's topography, with several holes climbing or descending through the woods and others opening to views of the surrounding valley. The design reflects Thompson's trademark strategic variety, offering a mix of short and long par fours, reachable and demanding par fives, and one-shot holes that require accurate club selection across uneven lies. Greens are typically moderate in size with subtle internal contours, and bunkering is restrained but well-placed to influence approach angles. The course serves primarily as a resort amenity for guests of the historic Château Montebello, a large log structure built in the 1930s that remains one of the region's notable heritage properties. The setting is quiet and forested, with a character more intimate than Thompson's larger championship designs, making it a representative example of his work on a smaller, resort-focused scale.
