Buffalo Dunes Course
Garden City, KS, USA

Buffalo Dunes Golf Course sits on rolling prairie land just outside Garden City in southwestern Kansas, a region characterized by its open horizons and persistent winds. Designed by Frank Hummel and opened in 1976, the course occupies natural sand dune terrain that gives the layout its name and distinctive character. The property's undulating topography is unusual for western Kansas, where much of the landscape runs flat, and these dunes provide both strategic interest and visual definition to the routing. The course plays as a municipal facility and serves as the primary public golf option for Garden City and the surrounding area. Its design takes advantage of the native landforms, with fairways that move through and around the dunes rather than attempting to flatten them. The wind is a constant factor in play, as it is throughout the High Plains, and club selection and shot shaping become essential skills for scoring well here. Several holes feature elevated tees or greens that emphasize the property's natural movement. Buffalo Dunes has hosted regional amateur competitions and serves as a tournament venue for western Kansas golf associations. The course maintains a reputation for firm, fast conditions during the warmer months, a product of both the sandy soil and the climate. For golfers traveling through this part of Kansas, it offers a genuine links-style experience shaped by wind and terrain rather than trees or water.

This golf course is a must play!!! The work that GCS Clay Payne and team have done is AMAZING!!! It’s worth a detour to see!
Buffalo Dunes is a hidden gem, great layout and course. Difficulty is 100% dependent on the wind.
Played an AJGA here and the smallest airport i've ever been to.
Textbook definition of a hidden gem. Awesome course and great staff
Buffalo is well on its way to being a nationally recognized course. It already has been noted on a few lists as one of the better Muni’s in America but the renovations they just finished put it right up there with fellow muni’s Bethpage and Torrey Pines. The recent renovation is already 90% grown in and this place will be immaculate in a matter of months. They hosted a Symetra and All Pro Tour, among other events in the past. And I expect they will become a regular stop for a handful of tours going forward. What an absolute treat that is truly in the middle of nowhere. This course, similar to Western Nebraska, could put this region on the map.
