Blacknest Course
Alton, Hampshire, England

Blacknest Golf and Country Club sits in the gently rolling Hampshire countryside near Alton, a market town positioned between the South Downs and the North Wessex Downs. The course was designed by Mr. Nicholson, though detailed records of the design's origins and development remain limited in widely accessible sources. The layout occupies terrain characteristic of this part of Hampshire, where modest elevation changes and mixed woodland create natural definition and variety across the routing. The course serves as a members' facility with country club amenities, reflecting the traditional English golf club model that combines the game with social and dining functions. Alton's location roughly midway between London and the south coast places Blacknest within reach of golfers from both metropolitan and rural communities. The surrounding landscape retains much of its agricultural and wooded character, providing a setting that feels removed from urban development despite reasonable accessibility. Hampshire golf courses typically navigate clay-based soils and mature tree cover, conditions that influence drainage, playing firmness, and strategic design. Blacknest operates within this regional context, offering golf that reflects the county's established club tradition rather than championship ambitions. The club maintains its place among the network of member-focused courses that form the backbone of English club golf, emphasizing regular play and community over tournament hosting or national recognition.
Really not a great track. Somewhat glad they closed this place and reopened it after spending a fortune. Yet to play the new course since reopening now know as mad swans.
