Robert von Hagge designed the facility's two eighteen-hole courses, Acoma and Sandia, which opened in the early 1980s as part of a master-planned residential community. Von Hagge, known for his bold bunkering and strategic use of water hazards, shaped both layouts to work with the natural terrain and take advantage of the dramatic mountain backdrop that defines the eastern horizon. The Acoma and Sandia courses share the characteristic features of von Hagge's desert designs: generous fairways bordered by native vegetation, large sculptured bunkers, and water features that come into play on several holes. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes across the property, with some holes playing uphill toward the Sandias and others descending back toward the valley floor. The high altitude—Albuquerque sits above 5,000 feet—affects ball flight noticeably, and players adjust club selection accordingly. Tanoan operates as a private equity club serving its residential membership. The facility includes practice areas and a clubhouse that caters to the social and dining traditions typical of Southwestern country clubs.
