Robert von Hagge

Robert von Hagge was an American golf course architect who designed more than 250 courses across over 20 countries during a prolific career spanning five decades. Born Robert Bernhardt Hagge in 1927, he began his professional journey as a commercial artist and appeared in television commercials as the Marlboro Man before entering golf design. He apprenticed under renowned architect Dick Wilson starting in 1955, contributing to 40 courses before establishing his own firm in 1963, adopting the surname "von Hagge."

Von Hagge's portfolio showcases exceptional range and geographic diversity. His American work includes prominent projects such as the Tournament Course at The Woodlands Country Club, Walden on Lake Conroe, The Cliffs, and both the Kings and Queens courses at Gleneagles Country Club in Texas. His Florida portfolio features The Hammock and Dolphin courses at Ocean Reef Club, the East Course at The Club at Admirals Cove, and work at Trump National Doral Miami. Beyond the United States, he designed noteworthy international venues including Les Bordes in France, Ocean Shores and The Lakes in Australia, and multiple courses in Mexico, Argentina, and Japan.

His designs often reflect bold, strategic architecture suited to both championship play and member enjoyment, cementing his legacy as one of the most internationally accomplished architects of his generation. Von Hagge passed away in 2010.
