Alice Dye was an accomplished amateur golfer and pioneering golf course designer, widely recognized as the "First Lady" of golf architecture in the United States. Born in 1927, she combined her deep understanding of the game—honed through competitive play—with a distinctive design philosophy that emphasized strategic options and playability for golfers of varying skill levels. Working alongside her husband Pete Dye, she played an integral role in shaping some of American golf's most respected courses.
Her design portfolio includes significant contributions to courses such as Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indiana, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort, and Radrick Farms Golf Club in Michigan. Alice Dye's influence extended to projects at Austin Country Club, Meridian Hills Golf Club, and La Quinta Resort's Citrus Course, among others. Her thoughtful approach to course architecture, particularly in creating strategic challenge without sacrificing accessibility, helped redefine modern golf design during the late 20th century.
Alice Dye passed away in February 2019, leaving behind a legacy that opened doors for women in golf architecture and permanently shaped the game's design landscape.
