Yampa Valley Golf Club sits in Craig, a small ranching and energy town in northwestern Colorado's Yampa River valley. The course occupies rolling high-desert terrain at roughly 6,200 feet elevation, where the landscape blends sagebrush-covered hills with irrigated fairways and cottonwood-lined corridors. The original nine holes were designed by William H. Tucker and William Howard Neff in the mid-twentieth century, establishing a layout that worked with the natural contours and seasonal water features of the valley floor. John Cochran later contributed to the course's development, and Jeff Potts completed a renovation and expansion that brought the facility to its current eighteen-hole configuration. The routing takes advantage of elevation changes and open views toward the surrounding mesas and distant mountain ranges. Fairways are typically generous, reflecting both the wide-open character of the region and the practical demands of a course serving a small community. Greens are modest in size and protected by bunkers and native grasses, with occasional water hazards fed by irrigation channels. Wind is a frequent factor, particularly in spring and fall, adding variability to club selection and approach play. Yampa Valley functions as the primary golf facility for Craig and the surrounding area, serving both local members and visitors passing through northwestern Colorado. The club maintains a straightforward, welcoming atmosphere consistent with rural Western golf clubs, where the focus remains on accessible play and community connection rather than tournament prestige or national recognition.
