Wintergreen Golf and Country Club

Wintergreen Golf and Country Club sits in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies near Bragg Creek, Alberta, roughly 40 kilometers west of Calgary. Bill Newt designed the layout to work with this topography, incorporating the native grasses, stands of pine and spruce, and occasional creek corridors that define the landscape in this part of Alberta. The setting offers views toward the Front Range of the Rockies, particularly from elevated tee boxes and fairways on the property's higher ground. Holes move through a mix of open and treed areas, with strategic bunkering and green complexes that reflect the design sensibilities of courses built to accommodate the region's climate and growing season. The layout requires thoughtful club selection and course management, as wind from the mountains can be a factor and the firm conditions common to Alberta foothill courses reward precision over distance. Wintergreen serves a membership drawn largely from the Calgary area and the surrounding communities. The club functions as a seasonal facility, with operations shaped by Alberta's continental climate. It represents one of several courses in the Bragg Creek and Kananaskis corridor that offer golf in a mountain-proximate environment without the full alpine character of resort properties farther west.
