Westport Golf Club

Westport Golf Club sits on the shores of Clew Bay in County Mayo, with the distinctive peak of Croagh Patrick rising to the south. Fred Hawtree designed the parkland layout in the 1970s, routing holes through mature woodland and along elevated ground that provides views across the bay and its many small islands. The course occupies land that once formed part of the Westport House estate, and the design takes advantage of natural elevation changes and tree-lined corridors. The front nine moves through wooded terrain with several holes playing along ridges, while the back nine opens toward the bay and includes more exposed ground. The par-three 15th plays downhill with Clew Bay as a backdrop, and the closing holes return toward the clubhouse through parkland character. Hawtree's routing creates variety in both playing angles and visual settings, with the coastal views distinguishing the layout from purely inland parkland courses. Westport serves as a members' club and welcomes visitors throughout the season. The town of Westport, a planned Georgian settlement nearby, provides a base for golfers exploring the region, and the course benefits from its proximity to both mountain and coastal landscapes. The club has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains a fixture in Mayo golf, offering a parkland experience shaped by its particular setting on the western Irish coast.
