Powerscourt Golf Club

The West Course at Powerscourt Golf Club occupies a dramatic hillside site in County Wicklow, approximately twenty miles south of Dublin. Designed by David McLay Kidd and opened in 2003, the course sits within the historic Powerscourt Estate, with the Wicklow Mountains forming a theatrical backdrop and views extending across the estate's formal gardens toward the Irish Sea. The routing takes advantage of significant elevation changes, with several holes playing steeply uphill or downhill through mature woodland and open parkland. Kidd's design incorporates wide fairways and large, undulating greens that reward strategic positioning, though the terrain itself provides much of the challenge. The opening holes move through relatively level ground before the course climbs into the hills, where exposed tee shots and approach plays require careful club selection in the often-present wind. The par-three seventh plays dramatically downhill, while the closing stretch returns toward the clubhouse with views of the Sugarloaf Mountain and the estate's Palladian mansion. The course shares the property with Powerscourt's East Course, designed by Peter McEvoy and opened in 2003 as well. The estate itself dates to the thirteenth century, though the present house was built in the eighteenth century and restored after a fire. The golf club operates as a semi-private facility, welcoming visitors alongside members, with the historic setting and mountain scenery distinguishing it from flatter parkland layouts elsewhere in the Dublin region.
