The West Course at La Manga Club Resort was designed by Dave Thomas and opened in 1972 as part of this expansive golf resort in the Murcia region of southeastern Spain. Thomas, a former Ryder Cup player turned prolific course architect, created a layout that navigates gently rolling terrain with views toward the surrounding mountains and Mediterranean coastline. The course represents traditional European resort design from its era, with strategic bunkering and water features integrated throughout the routing. The layout plays across relatively open terrain with scattered pines and palms, characteristic of the semi-arid landscape near Cartagena. The design emphasizes accuracy over length, with fairways that reward positioning and greens protected by bunkers and occasional water hazards. The course has undergone updates over the decades to maintain conditioning standards and adapt to modern equipment, while preserving Thomas's original strategic concepts. La Manga Club has served as a training venue for European Tour professionals and hosts various amateur competitions throughout the year. The resort's three courses—West, South, and North—have made it a popular destination for European golfers seeking winter sun and multi-day golf packages. The West Course remains the resort's signature layout, offering a test that balances accessibility for resort guests with enough challenge to engage accomplished players.
