West at East Sussex National Hotel & Resort

The West Course at East Sussex National Hotel & Resort opened in 1990 as part of a major golf development near Uckfield, designed by American architect Bob Cupp. The property sits on former parkland in the Sussex countryside, roughly midway between London and the south coast. Cupp, known for his work with Jack Nicklaus before establishing his own practice, created two championship-length courses here—the West and the East—both carved from relatively flat terrain and characterized by extensive earthmoving that produced bold contouring, large-scale bunkering, and strategic water hazards.

The West Course stretches over 7,100 yards from the championship tees and features wide fairways bordered by mature trees and dense rough, with water coming into play on several holes. The design emphasizes target golf with well-defined landing areas and greens protected by deep bunkers and mounding typical of American resort-style architecture from that era. The course has a parkland character rather than links, with significant elevation changes created artificially to add visual drama and strategic variety to what was originally flatter ground.

East Sussex National has hosted professional events on the European Tour and European Challenge Tour, giving the West Course exposure as a tournament venue capable of testing elite players. The resort includes hotel accommodations and extensive practice facilities, positioning itself as a destination for visiting golfers exploring courses in southeast England. The layout rewards accuracy and course management over pure distance, with water hazards and bunkering requiring careful navigation throughout the round.
