The Legend at Belle Mare Plage Golf Club occupies a coastal stretch along Mauritius's eastern shore, designed by South African architect Hugh Baiocchi. The course opened in 2002 as part of the Belle Mare Plage resort development, representing one of the island nation's early championship-caliber layouts. Baiocchi, known for his work across southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region, routed the course through relatively flat terrain characteristic of Mauritius's coastal plains, incorporating the natural vegetation and prevailing trade winds into the design strategy. The layout runs through groves of casuarina trees and indigenous coastal flora, with several holes playing directly alongside the Indian Ocean. The proximity to the sea introduces wind as a consistent factor, particularly on the outward nine. Water features appear throughout the routing, both as strategic hazards and aesthetic elements that complement the tropical setting. The course measures over 6,000 meters from the championship tees, providing length appropriate for resort play while maintaining accessibility for varied skill levels. Belle Mare Plage operates as a resort facility, with The Legend serving alongside a second eighteen-hole course, The Links, also designed by Baiocchi and opened shortly after. The club caters primarily to resort guests and visiting golfers, offering a tropical golf experience distinct from the island's interior layouts. The setting combines the coastal environment with maintained fairways and greens that contrast against the darker volcanic soils and dense vegetation native to the region.
