The Idaho Club

The Idaho Club occupies a forested mountainside site above Lake Pend Oreille near Sandpoint in the Idaho Panhandle. Jack Nicklaus designed the course, which opened in the late 1990s as the centerpiece of a private residential community. The routing takes advantage of dramatic elevation changes and dense stands of pine and fir, with several holes offering views across the lake and surrounding Selkirk and Cabinet mountain ranges. The property's natural topography creates significant variety in hole character, from elevated tee shots through narrow corridors to approach shots played across ravines or to greens perched on ridges. The design incorporates Nicklaus's characteristic strategic bunkering and generous landing areas that reward accurate placement over pure distance. Water features appear on several holes, and the mountain terrain produces both uphill and downhill shots that require careful club selection. The course plays through relatively undisturbed forest, giving it a secluded, wilderness character uncommon among resort-style private clubs. The Idaho Club operates as a private equity club serving members who are primarily property owners within the development. The facility includes additional amenities typical of destination mountain clubs, including lodging and dining. Sandpoint's location in northern Idaho, roughly eighty miles from Spokane, positions the club as a seasonal retreat in a region known more for skiing and lake recreation than golf. The course represents one of the few Nicklaus designs in the inland Northwest and remains the most prominent championship-caliber layout in the Idaho Panhandle.
