Black Rock Course
Coeur d'Alene, ID, USA

Black Rock occupies a dramatic hillside site in the mountains north of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where architect Jim Engh routed eighteen holes across rugged terrain characterized by exposed basalt outcroppings, steep elevation changes, and dense stands of pine and fir. Engh, known for bold and unconventional designs throughout the Rocky Mountain West, shaped the course to emphasize the natural rock formations and to offer sweeping views of Lake Coeur d'Alene and the surrounding peaks. The layout moves through varied topography, with several holes playing sharply uphill or downhill and others threading through forested corridors or across open ridges. The design features wide fairways in places but demands precise approach work to greens that are often elevated, angled, or protected by the site's natural rock walls and steep falloffs. Engh incorporated the black basalt into the visual composition of many holes, using the stone both as framing elements and as hazards. The course sits within a residential community but retains a sense of seclusion due to the heavily wooded property and the scale of the terrain. Black Rock serves as a daily-fee facility and attracts golfers drawn to the combination of mountain scenery and Engh's distinctive architectural style. The course plays at various yardages depending on tee selection, with the back tees stretching well over seven thousand yards. The elevation and the exposed nature of the site mean that weather and wind can influence play significantly, particularly in spring and fall.
