The Grand Del Mar Course
San Diego, CA, USA

The Grand Golf Club at The Grand Del Mar, carved into the sun-drenched hills of San Diego, presents a challenge and an experience that, while not steeped in championship history, possesses an undeniable charm. Designed in the early 2000s, the course is an example of modern American golf architecture, winding through a landscape more reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside than the typical California terrain. Tom Fazio's design favors players who can shape the ball, with strategically placed bunkers and undulating fairways that reward thoughtful approaches. The layout encourages a varied game; it’s neither overly penal for the average golfer nor simplistic for the low-handicapper. While the course isn't particularly known for its difficulty, the firm and fast conditions typical of the area demand respect and sound decision-making. What sets The Grand Golf Club apart is its integration with the overall resort experience. It’s a haven of manicured greens and secluded fairways, offering a sense of escape. While The Grand Golf Club hasn't played host to any notable professional tournaments, it remains a popular destination for vacationers and locals alike, eager to enjoy a round amidst the resort's luxurious setting. Beyond the golf, the club is known for its unpretentious yet elevated atmosphere. The post-round camaraderie often centers around enjoying the resort's amenities, solidifying its reputation as an ideal location for a relaxed, yet upscale, golf getaway.

Golfers say this Tom Fazio design delivers fun, challenging holes with great views throughout the round, particularly striking during golden hour. Most praise the quick greens and engaging routing tucked into an attractive neighborhood setting, though some find certain greens in less-than-ideal condition. Reviewers note that pace can lag due to the resort clientele, but the overall experience remains enjoyable for those who gain access to this semi-private or private facility.

Golden hour tee time had all the best views
Semi private course tucked away in a very nice neighborhood. Lots of fun holes with great views, pretty challenging. Greens were quick but some of them were a bit shot. Pace was alright, with it being a resort you expect some slow golfers. Fun track.
