The Champions Course
Jacksonville, FL, USA

The Champions at Julington Creek Golf Course is a daily-fee facility in Jacksonville, Florida, designed by Robert C. Walker and Steve Melnyk. Walker, a Florida-based architect active from the 1970s through the 1990s, collaborated with Melnyk, a former PGA Tour player who turned to course design after his competitive career. The course opened in the mid-1990s as part of the residential development boom in the Jacksonville area, serving the growing communities south of the city proper. The layout occupies rolling terrain characteristic of northeast Florida's coastal plain, with elevation changes modest but noticeable compared to the region's flatter courses. Natural wetlands and preserved pine and hardwood corridors frame many holes, and water features come into play on several holes, typical of Walker's Florida work. The routing takes advantage of the property's natural contours to create variety in shot values and visual interest without dramatic manufactured features. Julington Creek sits in a suburban setting along the creek of the same name, a tributary system feeding into the St. Johns River. The course serves both local residents and visitors to the Jacksonville metropolitan area, offering a straightforward test of golf suited to a range of skill levels. Conditioning and playability reflect its role as an accessible public facility in a competitive market where numerous courses vie for daily-fee play.
Grew up playing this course, was our home course for MS golf. Personally hate the layout - lots of odd holes. Routed through the entire Julington Creek Plantation neighborhood so definitely not walker friendly either but the conditions have improved immensely in recent years. Not a bad value but I don’t like playing it. Frequented the range almost every day and it’s in dire need of improvement - the hitting area is mats but they’re so worn it’s basically like playing off the concrete slab underneath. Chipping and putting areas are fine but can get overcrowded quickly
